Charleston and the Silver Screen

Nearly everyone in town knows that films such as The Notebook and Dear John were filmed in the Charleston, however this area has been the backdrop for many others over the years. So rather than walking down King Street or waiting outside the Charleston Naval Base in hopes of meeting the cast of Army Wives, consider visiting these Lowcountry sites that have made their way onto the silver screen. 


1. Movie: Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995)
​
     Actor: Jim Carrey

​     Summary: Funny man Carrey plays the role of Ace Ventura, a retired animal investigator who inspects the disappearance of a sacred bat.    

     Where: Botany Bay Plantation on Edisto Island and Cherokee Plantation
 


2.  Movie: The Patriot (2000)

     Actors: Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Joely Richardson and Leon Rippy
     Summary: During the American Revolution, Benjamin Martin (Gibson) becomes a leader for the South to avenge his son’s murder by a British officer.

​     Where: College of Charleston's Randolph Hall, Botany Bay Plantation on Edisto Island, Middleton Place Plantation and Cypress Gardens


3Movie: Cold Mountain (2003)

     Actors: Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger
     Summary: Based on the novel by Charles Frazier, this Civil War drama is about a wounded soldier's (Law) return to his true love (Kidman).

     Where: College of Charleston campus, and Cyprus Gardens​
 


4.  Movie: Forrest Gump (1994)

     Actors: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, and Gary Sinise
     Summary: This drama follows world events that take place around Forrest Gump (Hanks) from childhood to old age, but the one constant is his love for his

     childhood sweetheart, Jenny (Wright).

     Where: USC Beaufort, Fripp Island, Bluff Plantation and Beaufort
